CFD model of liquid mixing and heat transfer in a large batch reactor

SIMTEC used CFD modeling to verify the efficiency of KRONOSPAN's new batch reactor design. The model confirmed effective mixing and heat transfer, ensuring safe operation and preventing material solidification.

KRONOSPAN engineers needed to verify that the configuration of a new batch reactor design provided efficient mixing and heat transfer.


SIMTEC created a CFD model of the KRONOSPAN new batch reactor to predict its performance. The geometry included the rotating impeller, the baffles and the heat-exchange spiral pipes. For this case, the intense generation of heat could result to the solidification of the materials, effectively destroying the reactor contents or even the reactor itself.

The developed CFD model initially calculated the velocity field inside the reactor, especially capturing the swirling flow around the impeller. Then, the Multiple Reference Frame method was applied to simulate the mixing of the studied materials. Simulation results confirmed the efficiency of the new design in terms of rapid and sufficient mixing rates, which guaranteed the intended performance.
